Hey there,
I just got my first GPS, a Garmin 2720, and I'm having a tough time figuring it out... the help files and manuals have left me confused and baffled! To start with, how do I change a saved track into a route? Once I get a handle on turning tracks into routes, I want to try and download other people's rides and then uploading some of mine. Any help, tips, or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! |

As far as I know, the rides on here are all tracks, not routes. Some of the tracks (including some of mine) are over 500 points in length, which can be a problem for some GPS units. However, I feel that these tracks retain the most detail of the ride, and then you can pare down the number of points to what you would feel to be useful. As far as I know, stored tracks other than the active track can only contain 500 points, so you will have to reduce the number of points in the track, then upload this new track to your GPS. My site can do both routes and tracks, it's up to each contributor to decide which one they'd prefer to use. I know there is a way to save tracks as routes, but I can't remember how to do it right now. Probably because I don't really use routes a whole lot. I typically let the GPS auto-route me to the start/end of the saved track, then just follow the track from there.
Anyways, if you want to use tracks, but don't like how it has so many points in it, here's how you can convert a track to have less points in it. In this case, the track has 185 points (its from ride number 129 on my site), and I will convert it to have 100 points in it.
After you have downloaded the track from your GPS to Mapsource (assuming you are using Mapsource) or downloaded it from somewhere else, right click on the track and select "Track Properties". Now click on "Filter..." and you'll get a window that looks like the one I've attached in the image mapsource1.jpg below. Select "Maximum Points" and enter "100" in the box to the right of it and click ok. Then upload this track to your GPS. I tend to simply load the tracks, then use the trackback function to follow the tracks. |
